“NEEDS ANALYSIS IS A KEY CONCEPT IN BUSINESS ENGLISH AND ESP”
Evan will go over some simple techniques which we can use to better understand our learners’ needs, including anecdote circles, analysing workplace processes, and task-based assessment. We will also discuss the use of framework materials and authentic materials.

“AN EXTRA SHORT BEGINNERS GUIDE TO ESP: A PRACTITIONER’S PERSPECTIVE”
Nataliya will offer an overview of the differences between teaching General English and ESP courses, approaches to handling ESP requests and course design tips with a special focus on working with language users (in-service learning and teaching). She will also show how coaching models can be adjusted and applied to ESP.

She will begin by discussing the specific language needs of each group and then share actionable strategies for teaching English tailored to these professional contexts. Attendees will also examine authentic materials and engage in interactive activities, ensuring they leave with tools to effectively apply ESP in their students' workplaces.

Evan Frendo

ESP and Business English expert, a trainer, author of methodology books and corporate training materials, a speaker at leading ELT conferences

Evan has been involved in ESP and business English teaching since 1993. He also speaks regularly at conferences and other ELT events, and was the opening plenary speaker at the 2023 IATEFL Conference in Harrogate.
He has considerable experience in creating corporate in-house training materials, and has also authored several coursebooks and methodology books. The latter include "How to Teach Business English" (Pearson, 2005), a staple in business English teacher training courses.
His recent projects include training and consulting for the maritime industry, lecturing on the ESP module of the University of Malta's MA TESOL programme, and developing in-house materials for corporate clients. Evan has an LCCI Diploma in Teaching English for Business, and an MSc in Teaching English for Specific Purposes (Aston University).

Katrin Lichterfeld

Solution-focused coach and mentor, business English trainer focusing on communication across cultures, founder of Conversations about BELF

Katrin is an in-company trainer in Germany specializing in BELF-oriented communication across cultures. Starting her career in the export department of a beverage group, she holds an MA and CertIBET.
Katrin focuses on enhancing corporate training efficiency and works as a solution-focused coach (ICF PCC / EMCC SP). She also co-founded and co-authored the blog "Conversations about BELF."

Nataliya holds an MA in Linguistics as well as a number of international certifications, CELTA, Neurolanguage Coaching ®, © Language Leading Coaching, ICLA, and IH Business Culture Training among others.
Her key areas of expertise are English for business and professional communication (ESP), language and communication coaching, and pronunciation training. Nataliya also serves as a Board Member of the International Language Coaching Association (ILCA).
Nataliya likes to stress that in ESP, the language user’s context is the most important thing alongside their goals, which often lie outside the language itself and language is only a tool to achieve them faster.

Her portfolio includes developing lessons and courses for students from creative industries (producers, photographers), journalists covering war, elections, and anti-propaganda topics, as well as specialists in the Human Capital sector.
She holds a degree in Philology from Chernihiv National T.G. Shevchenko Pedagogical University and has completed internationally recognized certifications CELTA (2016), DELTA Module 2 (2019), DELTA Module 1 prep (2020), CPE Masterclass (C2) (2021).She believes that a successful ESP course combines real-life professional needs, industry-specific language, and tasks that reflect authentic workplace situations.
